Most of my leadership skills are high tier, according to the 6.2 Leadership Skills Questionnaire. My administrative skills are of the lowest. This skill is divided in three specific sets, which are managing people, managing resources and showing technical competence (Northouse, 2017). Out of the three, technical competence is where I would suffer. I have managed organizational resources to support agencies and squadrons for fund, supplies, equipment and other operations. I have managed and lead military and civilians to execute programs and events. I do feel due to my constantly change position within the Armed Forces has hurt my expertise in my Military Occupation. My interpersonal and conceptual skills are of higher quality due to my ever change positions. Utilizing those around me and finding solutions to execute concepts and ideas (Northouse, 2017) is how I have succeeded thus far. Though interpersonal and conceptual are equal, I pride myself on the ability to read others or having “social perceptiveness” (Northouse, 2017). I am able to foresee how others will respond to a problem or change and how they may react or solve it. This allows me to approach a stressful situation with what others may feel is important, the problems they may see, how I can motivate them to work as a team and how they may react to my decision. If I can persuade 70% of the team that this idea is the best, 20% will do what the majority agrees upon and the 10% will either give me little effort or just enough effort to not stick out of the group. This will allow a positive response within the environment and ultimately providing a product that is above expectations.

The impact I believe I will have is a positive one. Though that seems very vague and unspecific. I would like to think that is exactly what we need in this world, a more positive influence. My role as a leader will always be to ensure the final product is above expectations but to ensure those who follow me grow with every step. I once told my leadership that I do not put in time to ensure others matured; I invest a little of myself in those who believe in me and those that choose to follow me.

Administrative skills are those that allow a leader to accomplish the day to day tasks related to being a leader. These skills, or the activities that require them may not be the most desirable but they are critical to the success of a leader (Northouse, 2017). I scored 27 in administrative skills based on the assessment in the course text. This isn’t surprising to me since managing resources, people, and showing technical competence are typically my strong suits. I am very goal and achievement oriented, the kind of person who thrives on a task list! My administrative skills allow me to accomplish my task list daily, starting with what I consider the least desirable task on the list.

Interpersonal skills are people skills that enable a leader to work with others (Northouse, 2017). While I think I lean more to introversion than extroversion, I feel like I am still able to work with people fairly well. In this area, I scored 23 on the assessment in the course text. In my current role at work, I have to interact with several people across the country in order to effectively do my job. I have to be socially aware, practice emotional intelligence, and handle conflict when working with others. At the same time, I have several tasks and projects that I work on independently. I think this provides a balance for me since interpersonal skills aren’t my strongest skillset.

Conceptual skills allow a leader to take a concept or idea and bring it to life. “Conceptual skills involve the thinking or cognitive aspects of leadership and are critical to such things as creating a vision or strategic plan for an organization” (Northouse, 2017). I scored 21 in this skill based on the assessment in our course text, making this my weakest skillset. This doesn’t surprise me, I have a difficult time being creative. Concepts and ideas are difficult for me to grasp until there is something tangible for me to better understand. While I’m not good at generating ideas, I am good at problem solving which is related to conceptual skills. If someone gives me their idea, I can bring it life!

If I were to describe my leadership skills, I would say my behaviors as a leader are very driven by administrative skills. I have fairly strong interpersonal skills, but they aren’t generally what I rely on like I do my administrative skills. I feel as though administrative skills are how I get the job done, while I flex my interpersonal and conceptual skills when needed – so that my administrative skills can  cross the job off of my to do list! Conceptual skills are my weakest area because I have a struggle to find creativity. I feel as though conceptual skills and creativity go hand in hand. The biggest impact these skills have on me as a leader is how I leverage other people. Knowing my strengths and weaknesses allows me to engage and leverage others in the way that most suits the job at hand.
